Blue Devil Girls’ Tennis Set to Serve Aces

The Huntington High School varsity and JV girls’ tennis teams are eyeing the start of the 2023 fall season. The Blue Devils will hit the courts for the first day of practice on Monday, August 21 from 4:45-7:45 p.m.

The Huntington varsity will be coached by Jamie Fishlow with the JV squad being led by Eric Mininni. The Blue Devils expect to be competitive in league play. The schedule consists of 11 meets in including mandatory non-league matches against Bay Shore, Mount Sinai, Shoreham-Wading River and league contests with Commack, Hauppauge, Harborfields, Smithtown West, Kings Park, Smithtown East, John H. Glenn and Half Hollow Hills East.

The team will be led by All-County eighth grader Janita Files and All-County sophomore Mia Kaufman; All-League freshman Amanda Ganley and All-League sophomore Isabella Palacios.

Last fall for the first time in the program’s history, the Blue Devils advanced two players to the Section XI individual tournament championships.

Files compiled a 12-6 mark in No. 1 singles and Kaufman posted a 13-5-1 record. Ganley went 11-2 in No. 3 singles and Palacios was 9-7 in the No. 4 singles position. Balm and Buffa went 10-7 in No. 1 doubles.

The Blue Devils will also return solid and experienced varsity players in Jane Callery, Keira Coulter, Tess Markotsis and Claire Parks.

Last year’s junior varsity team consisted of Bridget Callery, Grace Gordon, Olivia Kaufman, Ellie Kaufman, Naomi Lyons, Grace Olivia, Emma Polinsky and Isabella Holland. Several players from this group are in line for promotion to the varsity team.

Checklist for Tryouts:

All students must be requalified prior to tryouts for each sports season. The following two forms are to be submitted to the school nurse on one of the listed requalification dates.

1. Required NYS Health Examination Form (click for link)

Physical exams can be performed by private doctor or school doctor and are valid for one year.

2. Interval Health History for Sports Participation (English/Spanish) (click for link)

A new form is required for each season; must be completed by parent/guardian, signed in ink and dated within 30 days of the start of the season (July 23, 2023 or later).

3. Parent Consent Form for Athletes (English/Spanish) (click for link)

Students interested in playing girls’ tennis are asked to report to the high school nurse’s office on Thursday, August 17 at 10 a.m. to submit forms and be cleared for the season.

Those who would like to get a physical exam performed by the school doctor can go to the nurse’s office on Thursday, August 17 at 9 a.m.
