Sarah Krisch Wins Carmela Santorsola Provenzano Scholarship

August 2, 2023

Huntington Class of 2023 member Sarah Krisch has captured the Carmela Santorsola Provenzano scholarship, which carries a stipend of $1,000.

The scholarship is presented in honor and memory of a woman who because of the expectations and constraints of the era in which she was raised didn’t have an opportunity to attend college.

The Carmela Santorsola Provenzano scholarship was endowed by her children and grandchildren in honor of her 90th birthday. Her dream was to become a teacher, but due to economic circumstances her education ceased following the eighth grade. “Her love for education was passed on to her children, one of whom worked as a counselor in Huntington UFSD for many years,” said guidance counselor Evelyn Hernandez, who announced this year’s scholarship recipient.

An Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor, Ms. Krisch was inducted into five separate academic honor societies. She intends to study biomedical engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology.

President of Huntington’s National Honor Society chapter, secretary of Grandfriends club and corresponding secretary of the environmental club, Ms. Krisch was also a chemistry lab assistant and a robotics team member while still being able to work at a part-time job in the community.

Ms. Krisch said that “fostering very close friendships” has made her high school experience a worthwhile one. She pointed to pursuing her interests and working hard to meet the high expectations she sets for herself along with balancing collaboration with thinking independently and being creative as among the keys to her success.
