Blue Devils Make Strides in Boys’ Cross Country

September 29, 2023

The Huntington varsity boys’ cross country team is captained by the squad’s lone senior, Ethan Goleski. The Blue Devil roster features a good mix of veterans and newcomers.

Freshman Eric Heinz and Ronan Driscoll have shined so far this season. “They both have a great opportunity this season and definitely in future seasons to push their times to qualify for the state championships,” head coach John Romano said. “They have really done a great job in pushing themselves each week of the season.”

The team’s captain is an effective leader and motivator. “Each week, Goleski is pushing Eric and Ronan to improve their times.” Romano said. “Goleski also has the best chance, as of now, to qualify for the states. His work ethic has been amazing. He’s been a true leader for a young team.”

Juniors John Joyce and Mike Mendikyan return to take the next step with the Blue Devils. “These two push each other every practice and every meet,” Romano said. “They both have shaved off 90 seconds from their previous 5K times this season and over three minutes off their best time from last season.”

Sophomore Juan Erazo running in his first season with Huntington has shown significant improvement and promise for upcoming meets. Freshmen Adan Ntambwe, Eli Levi and Townsel Henry “have done a great job improving their times while running in the freshman races during invitational meets,” Romano said. “They will be tested with the 5k course in the next few weeks.”

Romano is striving to develop a strong program that rises to among the best in Suffolk if not the state.
