Winning is Fun for Blue Devil Volleyball

The Huntington varsity girls’ volleyball team keeps winning and it’s been fun for the Blue Devils. The most recent victories came over Half Hollow Hills, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 and Newfield, 25-12, 20-25, 25-14, 25-19. The team is now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Against Newfield, Brianna Borenstein led the way with 14 kills, seven digs and six aces and Kate Barba added 12 kills, 11 digs and seven aces.
Huntington continues to play well, but the Blue Devils were pushed by Newfield, which had several nice runs during the match.
Lauren Donaghy had 28 assists, five aces and four digs along with a kill. Neurdia Osias tallied three kills along with a dig, block and ace. Emily Barba also turned in a great performance with six aces and four digs. Jocelyn Thorbourne had four digs and an ace and Zaida Correal had four digs. Isabella Morris also contributed with three digs and a block and Madelyn Falk had a dig.
Against Hills East, Donaghy tallied 23 assists, four digs, two kills and two aces and Kate Barba had 12 kills, six digs and three aces to pace Huntington. Osias had seven kills, three digs and three aces while Borenstein added six kills, five digs, two aces and an assist.
Head coach Todd Donaghy continues to utilize his entire roster. Everyone is contributing to Huntington’s success. The team needs eight league victories to gain a playoff berth.
Correal had five digs and three aces against Hills East and Thorbourne tallied two digs and two aces. Morris had three digs and Falk recorded one dig.
For those not well versed in the lexicon of volleyball, the following definitions are helpful when trying to put the player statistics into proper perspective:
• A dig is awarded when a defensive player successfully passes a ball that has been determined to be an attack by an opponent.
• A kill is awarded whenever an attack is unreturnable by the opposition and is a direct cause of the opponent not returning the ball.
• An ace is a serve that results directly to a point.
