Blue Devil Girls’ Volleyball Serving Aces

September 15, 2023

The Huntington varsity girls’ volleyball team is off to its best start in years after turning back West Islip and Amityville earlier this week on back-to-back days.

The Blue Devils are 5-1 and playing well. The victory over West Islip marked the first time Huntington defeated the Lions in decades. Scores in the five game match were close: 26-24, 21-25, 25-20, 19-25 and 15-10.

Huntington posted some stunning statistics in the two matches. To put the numbers into clear perspective, become familiar with these terms:

• A dig is awarded when a defensive player successfully passes a ball that has been determined to be an attack by an opponent.

• A kill is awarded whenever an attack is unreturnable by the opposition and is a direct cause of the opponent not returning the ball.

• An ace is a serve that results directly to a point.

Against West Islip, Kate Barba tallied 23 kills, 22 digs and five aces and Lauren Donaghy added 39 assists and nine kills. Neurdia Osias notched nine kills and a pair of blocks and Brianna Borenstein had 11 kills, eight digs, four assists and two aces.

Head coach Todd Donaghy proved adept at using his entire roster. Emily Barba tallied 13 digs, Zaida Correal had nine digs and Jocelyn Thorbourne contributed seven digs.

It was all Huntington against Amityville as the Blue Devils won three straight games, 25-17, 25-11, 25-19.

Kate Barba had 13 kills, three digs, three aces and an assist and Jocelyn Thorbourne added 19 assists, one kill and one dig. Brianna Borenstein enjoyed another great performance with five kills, five digs and an assist. Emily Barba tallied five digs, two aces and an assist. Neurdia Osias had four aces, three kills and a dig. Kymora Dorvilus also had three kills, two blocks and an assist. Madelyn Falk and Isabella Morris both notched aces.

With a dozen matches remaining, Huntington continues to have high hopes this fall.
