Vocalists and Musicians Join for September 11th Tribute
September 14, 2023
They weren’t even born when the terrible events of September 11, 2001 occurred, but a group of Huntington High School vocalists and musicians helped commemorate the victims and heroes of that day at this past Monday night’s meeting of the Huntington School Board.
As they marched into Adam Spector Auditorium at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School, 20 chamber choir members and two trumpeters made a statement of sorts. The group assembled in two rows on the stage with the trumpeters standing off on either side.
Once the meeting had been called to order by School Board President Xavier Palacios, the choir members, under the direction of Victoria Garbarino, performed a beautiful rendition of the Irving Berlin classic, “God Bless America” followed by the playing of “Taps” by sophomore trumpeters Dana Garcia and Liam LaVertu.
This year’s chamber choir features Layna Abraham, Jake Amend, Emily Barba, Liva Camarata, Kevin Dominguez, Michaela Dopico, Devon Elvir-Cover, Chloe Hunt, Rachel Huth, Emily Kustera, Walter Lopez Martinez, Mia Molina-Baptista, Taishawn Olton, Sergio Portillo, Sofia Rodriguez, Jayden Roman, Alexa Schrripa, Samuel Soric, James Stensland, Josie Sullivan, Alexander Tine and Lily Wasoski.
Mr. Palacios and Superintendent Christian Bowden spoke about the events of September 11, noting that schools across the district continue to commemorate the events of that day in their own unique ways.
“Twenty-two years have passed since the tragic events of 9/11, but the memories remain as many lives were lost leaving behind a void that can never be filled,” Mr. Bowen said. “By remembering, we ensure that the legacies of those we lost are not forgotten. Our students not only brought out emotion surrounding that day with their amazing tribute, but also demonstrated unity.”
