College Credit Available for Virtual Enterprise Course
September 11, 2023
Students enrolled in Huntington High School’s popular Virtual Enterprise business course have the option of gaining college credit for the honors level class at a discounted tuition price through Farmingdale State College. The option is just that; it isn’t mandatory.
The Virtual Enterprise course involves students developing a simulated business that is operated by the teenagers themselves. Class members assume various roles covering everything from the CEO’s office to product development and finances to marketing and public relations.
The class strives to simulate a real business environment. “Students learn about economics – micro and macro – and its relationship to and impact on business operations in the private enterprise system,” according to the course profile. “The students determine the nature of their business, its products and services, its management and structure. They learn about the daily operations of a business under the guidance of a consultant and with the support of a real business partner.”
The course utilizes business software packages and the internet for business transactions using economic principles as a factor in decision-making. The Virtual Enterprise classroom is on the lower level of the high school. The sleek space features equipment, technology and furniture specifically designed to meet the needs of students engaged in the class.
Huntington UFSD officials said the course is regarded as a capstone business class “to ensure that our students are college and career ready,” according to information supplied to the trustees prior to their consideration of the college credit option. This class will also help to prepare our students for the many STEM related careers that are available, with a particular focus on e-commerce and management.”
