Blue Devil Girls’ Volleyball Opens with Victories

September 6, 2023

The Huntington varsity girls’ volleyball team is flying high after opening up the season with victories on the road against Comsewogue and Centereach.

The Blue Devils topped Comsewogue in four games, 25-8, 23-25, 25-12, 25-11. Huntington then rallied to come-from-behind to edge Centereach 22-25, 17, 25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-12.

To put the statistics associated with the two victories into better perspective it is necessary to understand the terminology of volleyball:

• A dig is awarded when a defensive player successfully passes a ball that has been determined to be an attack by an opponent.

• A kill is awarded whenever an attack is unreturnable by the opposition and is a direct cause of the opponent not returning the ball.

• An ace is a serve that results directly to a point.

Against Comsewogue, senior Kate Barba had 18 kills, nine aces, six digs and an assist and junior Lauren Donaghy added 36 assists, six aces, four digs and three kills. Sophomore Brianna Borenstein tallied 13 kills, five digs, five aces and an assist.

The Blue Devils were also propelled by Neurdia Osias (five kills; two aces), Kymora Dorvilus (three kills; one dig; one block), Emily Barba (four digs; four aces), Zaida Correal (three digs) and Jocelyn Thorbourne (four digs; six aces).

“I am very proud of the team today for not giving up when we were down and fighting until the final points,” Kate Barba said. “Winning today marks a major step in our effort to make the playoffs.”

Donaghy was also feeling good after the win. “Down in games, 2-0, we found a way to comeback,” she said. “Kate, Brianna and Neurdia had some big hits and Jocelyn was able to put some important serves over. I think it was really a good way to start our season.”

Kate Barba turned in an exceptional performance against Centereach, too, with 29 kills, 17 digs, five aces and four assists. Donaghy did her part with a remarkable 43 assists, nine digs five kills and a block. Borenstein chipped in with 16 kills, nine digs and three aces. Emily Barba tallied 17 dig, one assist and one ace and Osias added seven kills, three digs, two aces and a block.

Isabella Morris (one kill; one dig), Kymora Dorvilus (one dig; one block) and Jocelyn Thorbourne (five digs; one ace) also played well.

The Blue Devils hope to keep the good times rolling this week.
