Blue Devil Co-ed Bowling Ready to Roll

October 23, 2023

The Huntington High School bowling team is set for its third season after being re-established following a nearly three decade absence. A new coach has been named to lead the Blue Devils into battle this winter.

Both boys and girls are eligible to play on the team. Since Huntington doesn’t have separate boys and girls teams, everyone is welcome to join the one team. Students can sign-up now in the high school nurse’s office.

Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School physical education teacher John Walsh has been named the team’s head coach. The Blue Devils will once again be decked out in gorgeous blue polo shirts. The team’s home base is Larkfield Lanes in East Northport, which it shares with teams from Northport and Harborfields high schools.

Mr. Walsh has been a Huntington physical education teacher since September 1994. A graduate of East Islip High School, he earned an undergraduate degree at SUNY Brockport and a master’s degree at Stony Brook University.

Mr. Walsh has taught at several schools within Huntington UFSD and currently serves at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School. He has coached boys’ volleyball on the middle school and high school levels and varsity girls’ soccer, bowling and softball.

The 2023/24 schedule has the varsity bowling team playing 16 home and away matches against Hauppauge, Smithtown, Northport, Central Islip, Islip, Commack, Harborfields and East Islip. Most of the matches will be held at Larkfield Lanes since that is also the home site of Northport and Harborfields.

The team will begin practicing on Monday, November 13. Practices will run from 3-5 p.m. Among the top returning bowlers are Jack Ruthkowski, Andrew Sullivan and Jillian Pascucci.

Athletes who want to play on the Blue Devil bowling team should sign-up in the nurse’s office now. Every student needs to get re-qualified by the school nurse prior to each sport season. The nurse can only clear a student-athlete who has the following forms on file:

1. Required NYS Health Examination Form (click for link)

Physical exams can be performed by private doctor or school doctor and are valid for one year.

2. Interval Health History for Sports Participation (English/Spanish) (click for link)

A new form is required for each season; must be completed by parent/guardian, signed in ink and dated within 30 days of the start of the season.

3. A parent consent form for athletes (English/Spanish) (click for link) should be handed to the coach prior to practicing.

School nurse Linda Amarante can be reached at 631.673.2146 or lamarante@hufsd.edu.

Mr. Walsh has been talking up the sport to build interest. Any student in grades 9-12 is eligible. Interested? Send a message to Mr. Walsh at jwalsh@hufsd.edu.
