AP 101 Workshop for Families Proves Informative

October 16, 2023

Huntington High School recently hosted an informative AP 101 workshop for families. The evening covered Advanced Placement course offerings and the benefits of taking the classes. Teachers and students participated in the session.

Huntington’s AP program offers college level courses and exams that students can take during high school. An exam in each respective course in given in May and students can earn college credit based on their test score.

Huntington offers AP courses in the arts, English, history, social science, math, computer science, the sciences and world languages and culture.

“Students should choose an AP course based on the subjects they’re passionate about and the classes they do well in,” said Jeannette Alomia, the district’s director of guidance who coordinated the evening.

Huntington offers more than 30 Advanced Placement courses. “Research consistently shows that AP students are better prepared for college than students who don’t take AP, regardless of their exam score,” Mrs. Alomia said. “They’re more likely to enroll and stay in college, do well in their classes and graduate in four years.”

According to the College Board, AP courses and exams can help students:

• Discover their passion

• Build valuable skills that are useful for all high school classes

• Improve grade point average

• Stand out on college applications

• Scholarship opportunities

• Earn college credit/better placement

• Save time and money on college courses

• Become comfortable with college level work

“The AP 101 workshop was a huge success,” Mrs. Alomia said. “We welcomed over 60 families and students from grades 8-11. The first portion of the event included an introduction to the AP program, the benefits of taking AP courses and course offerings at Huntington High School. Next, students and families participated in breakout sessions. The sessions were led by our dynamic AP teachers and students! Nineteen out of thirty-one AP courses were represented.”
