Huntington’s Environmental Club Pursues Mission
October 13, 2023
Huntington High School’s environmental club welcomed in the new school year with a firm commitment to its mission, which is namely to improve the environment of the school, community and world with a focus on sustainability and Earth-friendly advocacy.
The organization’s executive board consists of Jack Ruthkowski (co-president), Damaris Mani-Munoz (co-president), Samantha Koepele (co-vice president), Andrea Mani-Munoz (co-vice president), Jannel Marroquin (treasurer), Olivia Polinsky (recording secretary) and Charlotte Gordon (co-publicist) and Emma Boyle (co-publicist). Science teacher Deborah Beck is the group’s faculty advisor.
“The environmental club is working on a variety of exciting initiatives at the moment,” Ms. Gordon said. “We’ve restarted paper recycling in the science classrooms in order to work towards decreasing the school’s carbon footprint. If the recycling proves to be a success, we hope to branch out to other hallways and reinstate school-wide recycling as a whole. In addition to this, we are hosting our first ever clothing swap on November 3, where students will be able to partake in a school-wide thrifting experience. There is a $5 participation fee, which includes the price of clothing. We are asking Huntington High Schoolers to bring in clothing donations to room 141 in preparation for the event.”
Club members are energetic in pursuing the organization’s goals. “I absolutely love the environmental club with Mrs. Beck,” Damaris Mani-Munoz said. With her ideas and those of students, our meetings are never dull. This year, we are extremely enthusiastic about our little thrift clothing workshop coming in the month of November, which was an amazing idea proposed by Samantha Koepele.”
