Jake Amend Gets Excited at Huntington High School

October 10, 2023

Jake Amend is excited. The Huntington High School senior is bursting with enthusiasm over the varied activities and classes he has embraced this year. The teenager is involved in everything from the marching band, performing ensembles a choirs to the varsity fencing and spring track and field teams, esports, Natural Helpers and the drama club.

“I’m very excited to be a part of high school chamber choir for my third year,” Mr. Amend said. “I’m also very excited to be a part of the Blue Devil marching band for my fifth year, I’m very excited to be one of the co-captains for the high school Overwatch esports team and I’m also very excited to be vice president of the esports club.”

The senior added that he’s also “very excited” to be president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and Natural Helpers. He’s looking forward to performing with the wind ensemble and the a cappella choir for his fourth year.

A National Honor Society member, Mr. Amend participates in the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education performance program. “I’m also very excited to be in the high school musical for my third year,” Mr. Amend said.

The senior plans to return to the Blue Devil varsity fencing team this winter “and hopefully doing better than I did last year when I was ranked No. 4 in foil in Suffolk,” he said.

Mr. Amend is engaged in a credit bearing internship with science teacher Sarah Hall. He said he “loves working with her.”

“My Huntington High School experience has been different than I expected,” Mr. Amend said. “My freshman year we were virtual and then I thought sports and marching band was going to be my whole high school experience, but then my friend got me into singing and I got accepted into chamber choir for my sophomore year and I also started doing musicals my sophomore year and ever since then music and sports have become very important parts of my life.”

Mr. Amend spent time last summer joining a new fencing club and improving his skills, striving to become a better fencer.

“I don’t know where I’m going to get accepted to college, but I’m applying to about 15 schools,” Mr. Amend said. “I’m planning on going into secondary education, criminal justice or physics.”
