Southdown’s Shining September Stars Honored

A month into the new school year at Southdown Primary School, students are starting to hit their stride as they go about their business around the building and in and out of classrooms.

Southdown’s September Stars of the Month were presented with Splash Awards by Principal Jill Amott-Erwig. The youngsters were recognized for their overall effort and performance in classrooms and all around the building and grounds.

The Splash Awards take their name from the school’s mascot; a dolphin, which is well known for splashing water on anyone nearby.

September’s Splash Award recipients include:

Universal Pre-Kindergarten: Nina Fulton, Elle D’Avino Kindergarten: Camila Alfaro Castellon, Liam Hernandez Gomez, Aitana Lucero Aguilar, Shelby Walling, James McCarthy First Grade: Isaiah Booker, Henry Weston, Dereck Ruiz Ruiz, Rubina Jamaluddin Second Grade: Abigail Egan, Penny Rooney, Fiona Costanzo, Eleazar Amaya Third Grade: Carley Oliva, Michael Distl, Khailey Graham

Ms. Amott-Erwig has been Southdown’s educational leader since August 2021. At the time of her appointment in Huntington UFSD, Ms. Amott-Erwig had been serving as principal of PS 250 in Brooklyn. She was previously an assistant principal and lead teacher at PS 201 in Queens for five years.

Southdown’s second year principal earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Long Island University, CW Post College in 2004 and 2006, respectively.

Southdown’s family engagement night is set for Thursday, October 12 with the third grade Halloween Dance on Wednesday, October 25. A harvest festival is planned for Tuesday, October 31Math Night scheduled for Tuesday, October 18. A book fair will be held October 24-26.
