Southdown SDM Committee Establishes Goals for Year

The Southdown Primary School Shared Decision Making Committee has settled upon three school based team goals for 2023/24.

Southdown is led by Principal Jill Amott-Erwig. The building’s shared decision making committee is comprised of faculty members and parents.

Goal No. 1

By the end of the 2023/24 school year, 100 percent of Southdown families will participate in responding to a survey providing feedback and will highlight areas of opportunity and growth for building relationships with the school community, which will include administration, support staff, teachers, school aides, special area teachers, custodial staff, lunch staff and security.

Action Plan

• Develop an evening building wide participation event with Chromebooks and paper copies available for all.

• Provide a raffle for students when families complete the survey.

• Provide sealed envelopes on chairs with the paper survey during a school event.

Goal No. 2

By the end of the 2023/24 school year, the Southdown school community will participate in monthly book talks and read alouds celebrating students’ character built through character trait conversations and literature.

Action Plan

• Students who continue exhibiting the monthly character trait will be recognized at the monthly Splash assembly.

• Student who continue exhibiting the monthly character trait will participate in the morning announcements each day.

• Second and third graders will be reading buddies with kindergarten and first graders to model what the monthly character trait looks and sounds like through children’s literature.

Goal No. 3

By end of the 2023/24 school year, the Southdown community (families, students and staff) will continue to participate in the two activities implemented over the last two years that support in giving back to their community. We will embed a third and new activity for this school year that will also teacher the characteristic of giving back while support the Down’s Syndrome community.

Action Plan

• Southdown Strong Walk-a-Thon to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A donation will be sent to Pink Aid in Huntington.

• Baby blessings – The entire school community will be able to donate baby goods to support families who are in need for their newborns.

• Walk/fundraiser/Crazy Sock Day and an assembly to support World Down’s Syndrome Day on March 21, 2024.
