November 16, 2023
Huntington’s varsity girls’ soccer team never gave up, even when outmatched or down several goals. The Blue Devils gave it their all.
Coached by Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School physical education teacher John Walsh and Finley Middle School math teacher Vincent Tannazzo, the squad was captained by Reese Rinaldi, Riley Murtagh and Emersen Evans.
Rinaldi garnered All-Division honors as one of Suffolk’s finest goalkeepers. Center midfielders Devon St. John and Cameron Smith and forward Madyn Kalb also enjoyed standout seasons.
“Reese kept us in games,” Walsh said. “Devon, Cameron and Madyn led our attack.” The highlight of the season was a 2-1 victory at Comsewogue.
“The team worked hard and never gave up,” Walsh said. “We competed hard in all games. We needed to learn how to win.”
Looking ahead to next fall, Huntington will return current eighth graders Angela Abbatiello, Emma Barch, Julia Hotine and Alessandra Leotta; freshmen Leighton Evans and Kalb; sophomores Ruby Baliber, Ruby Hoffman, Jolie Weinschreider and Smith; and juniors Sophie Carlson, Jamie Garcia Soto, Jenna Italiano, Kaylee Smalling and St. John.
The Blue Devils lost five games by one goal. The Blue Devils are hoping to see a reversal of their fortunes next fall. “We should know how to win,” Walsh said.
