Finley SDM Committee Sets School Based Team Goals

The J. Taylor Finley Middle School Shared Decision Making Committee has adopted a pair of school based team goals for the 2023/24 school year.
Finley is led by Principal Traci Roethel and Assistant Principal Kenneth Parham. The school houses hundreds of seventh and eighth graders. It opened in September 1965 and has been in service to Huntington UFSD ever since then.
Goal No. 1
Maintain the district’s commitment to enhancing its culture of appreciation for the diverse nature of our school district community and its students through associated analysis and alignment of curriculum and instruction, recruiting and hiring practices and professional development.
Action Plan
• Create a bulletin board focused on a monthly theme along with holiday celebrations and traditions of cultures around the world.
• Weekly announcements highlighting a people of diverse backgrounds/heritage during morning announcements.
• Participate in the “No Place for Hate” program and implement three activities that will help ensure the voices of students are heard.
• Ensure the Finley library contains materials that are diverse along with online access focused on a variety of cultures represented within the building and community.
• Have a homeroom with student ambassadors that will be the voice of Finley.
Goal No. 2
Implement and evaluate programs that support the social and emotional well-being of our students and staff to build upon interpersonal connections throughout the district.
Action Plan
• Continue to offer the following programs at Finley: Friendship Club, Community Club, restorative circles, mentors, therapy dogs
• Hold at least two assembly programs related to social and emotional well-being.
• Have a homerun with student ambassadors that will be the voice of Finley.
Conduct a year end survey of students to ascertain their experience at Finley and the effectiveness of the assembly program.
