Washington School Celebrates America’s Veterans

November 15, 2023

Washington Primary School hosted its annual Salute to Veterans Celebration late last week as family members and friends of students, faculty and staff members who served or are currently active in the United States Armed Forces turned out for the festivities.

Students, under the direction of classroom teachers and music teacher Jacqueline Wetzel, recited poems and sang songs to show their appreciation for the brave acts of all veterans.

The celebration opened with kindergarten students leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Principal Michelle Richards followed with words of appreciation and greetings.

“Washington Primary School has a ‘Thank You’ bulletin board that continues to grow as we receive photographs of veterans who are part of our school and Huntington community,” Dr. Richards said.

Kindergartners read the poem, “I Have a Little Poppy” and sang, “God Bless America.”

First graders read the poem, “Poppy, Poppy” and sang “American the Beautiful.”

Second graders read the poem, “See the Veteran” and sang “This Land is Your Land.”

Third graders read the poem, “Not Enough” and sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Several dozen veterans were honored during the celebration, including 19 from the US Army; four from the US Marine Corps; eight from the US Navy and three from the US Air Force. Although no veterans from the US Coast Guard were on hand, students also paid tribute to that branch, too.

“It was an uplifting day for everyone at Washington Primary School,” Dr. Richards said.
