November 9, 2023
Huntington High School’s Science National Honor Society chapter inducted 27 new members during a Monday night ceremony in the auditorium.
Prospective Science National Honor Society members must meet stringent requirements, including a minimum average of 90 in science and 85 in all classes. To remain in good standing, society members must compete in science competitions, perform peer tutoring, participate in club fundraising and attend meetings on a regular basis.
This year’s inductees include Genesis Acevedo, Anthony Addeo, Jordana Boxer, Jupiter Brown, Kimberly Castro Perdomo, Ludo Cattano, Lauren Donaghy, William Fallon, Ethan Goleski, Amelia Heinz, Dylan Heller, Griffin Kanzer, Emily Kustera, Caitlin Maher-Dubnau, Caroline McGreevy, Jordana Paniccia, Evan Persampire, Emma Polinsky, Dylan Proctor, Anthony Retamal Vidal, Aine Rimkunas, Ryan Scanlon, Abby Schueller, Jaipreet Singh, Thomas Smith, Angel Villatoro and Dylan Wong.
Huntington’s 2023/24 Science Honor Society chapter is led by Lucas Spagnoletti (president), Mary Marinello (vice president), Benjamin Edgar-McNerney (recording secretary), Reese Rinaldi (treasurer) and Olivia Polinsky (tutoring coordinator). Teachers Deborah Beck and Luigi Papasidero are the organization’s faculty advisors.
The Science National Honor Society was organized in 2000 with the following objectives:
• To encourage and recognize scientific and intellectual thought.
• To advance students’ knowledge of classical and modern science.
• To communicate with the scientific community.
• To aid the civic community with its comprehension of science.
• To encourage students to participate in community service and in turn, encourage a dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all of mankind.
The motto inscribed in Latin on the Science National Honor Society shield translates to “Fortunate is one who understands the causes of things.” Each chapter of the organization is required to pursue at least one project each school year.
Seniors Jannel Marroquin and Charlotte Gordon were this year’s induction ceremony guest speakers. Each described their affection for science and the role it has played in their lives.
Department Director Dr. Teresa Grossane also addressed the crowd, which included Principal Brenden Cusack and Assistant Principals Gamal Smith and Patricia Avelli along with Huntington School Board Vice President Michele Kustera, whose daughter, Emily was inducted into the organization.
A string quartet delighted the crowd as it filed into the cavernous auditorium with a pleasing selection of classical favorites. The musicians included Charlotte Gordon and Lily Tierney on violins I and II, Damaris Mani-Munoz on viola and Naomi Lyons on cello.
The new Science Honor Society members are excited to start participating in the organization’s 2023/24 activities.
