Studio Art Students Create Colorful Original Designs
November 3, 2023
Huntington High School Studio Art students recently learned about Dia de los Muerto; the Day of the Dead. It’s a traditional Mexican holiday that’s celebrated on November 1-2.
“During this holiday, families honor those who are deceased,” Ms. Merget said. “The Studio Art classes learned about symbols such as skeletons, skulls, ofrendas, flowers, butterflies and more. Students created original designs using colored pencils and sharpies. While working on this project we focused on the elements of art. It’s important to note that Dia de los Muertos is a rich and diverse cultural celebration with deep roots in history. Many of our students celebrate this holiday and were proud to create beautiful works that they can share with others.”
The teacher earned an Advanced Regents Diploma at Wantagh High School. Ms. Merget later obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Hofstra University and a master’s degree in studio art with a focus on pottery and wheel throwing. She has 50 post-master credits focused on art education, teaching students of other languages, social and emotional learning and technology.
“I love working in Huntington with a diverse group of students,” said Ms. Merget, who recently received tenure. “I am currently teaching Studio Art and Ceramics & Sculpture I am the Director of our SCOPE Summer Enrichment program. I also assist with the girls’ varsity golf team. One of my favorite events at Huntington is the K-Factor. I love seeing students outside of the academic atmosphere and highlighting their passions and talents. I was lucky enough to win the very first teacher solo act by fundraising $200.”
Ms. Merget took a course at the Art League of Long Island last summer. “It is important for me to remain current in the art world and keep my art skills strong,” she said.
Outside of her life as a teacher, you can find Ms. Merget rooting for the New York Mets and the New York Jets.
