The J. Taylor Finley Middle School girls’ tennis team compiled a 7-3 record against a slate of strong opponents. The highlight of the season was a 7-3 victory over Commack that was decided by a tiebreaker in the final match.

Coached by Woodhull School physical education teacher Eric Triolo, the 17-player team featured a mix of returning veterans and promising newcomers.

“The team worked hard and improved every day,” Triolo said. “We had an excellent season. The girls were so much fun and were a pleasure to coach.”

Finley was led by singles players Bryce Gilroy, Violet Palacios, Juliet Johnson and Lia Zivkovic. Zoe Chiclacos and Ali Brady were doubles team standouts.

“Bryce played first singles, which goes up against the top competition in the league,” Triolo said. “She was a first year player who did an unbelievable job playing the top players. She improved so much throughout the season and will be a top player in high school.”

Palacios also enhanced the Finley singles lineup. “Our top returning player from last year, Violet always does a great job,” Triolo said. “She has a great attitude and will continue to be a very important player at the high school.”

Johnson was new to the team, but played like a veteran. “Juliet continued to improve every day,” Triolo said. “A hard worker, she was a pleasure to coach.”

Zivkovic also enjoyed an impressive year. “Lia is another first year player who is an excellent athlete,” Triolo said. “She had an 8-2 record and won many important matches. She’s a pleasure to coach and has such a positive attitude.”

The team’s win over Commack marked the first team Triolo was able to beat that school since he’s coached Finley.

Looking ahead to next fall, Triolo feels good about Finley’s chances. “We are losing our top four singles players and will be counting on the returning players to continue our success,” he said. “If the girls practice in the off-season and continue to improve their skills, we will be successful again.”
