H-ton Girls’ Flag Football Gains Momentum

March 27, 2023

Huntington’s brand new varsity girls’ flag football team continues to gain momentum. The Blue Devils participated in a jamboree at Hauppauge that drew all Suffolk teams and a three way scrimmage at county champion Walt Whitman last weekend. Another scrimmage is set for later this week with Harborfields

“Huntington’s first girls flag football season is off to a great start,” said Shea Scully, a Huntington High School physical education teacher who is the team’s founding coach. “The first week of practice was filled with the basic skills needed to play flag football such as throwing, catching and pulling flags and now we are diving straight into positioning and game-like scenarios.”

The Blue Devils sent 16 of their 25 players to the Suffolk flag football jamboree at Hauppauge.

Scully is being assisted by Gabrielle Valela. The team is captained by Asyria Rios, Theresa Rivera and Aylana Powell.

“Watching this wonderful group of young ladies take on a new sport with such passion and resilience is such an honor and privilege to be a part of,” Scully said. “They show up every day ready to learn and give it their all not only to improve their individual skills, but also to help build their team into one to be reckoned with.”

The three captains are all doing their part to get the new team off the ground successfully. “From the first day of tryouts, these three ladies have taken the initiative and led the team through warm-ups and drills as well as playing a key role in contributing to create an environment where individuals feel safe and supported to make mistakes and learn.”

Huntington will play its season opener against Connetquot at Blue Devil Stadium on Thursday, April 3 at 5 p.m.

“Coach Valela and I are so excited to see how our team will grow and improve as the season progresses,” Scully said.
