Huntington High School’s brand new varsity girls’ golf team is ready to tee-off after working indoors for two weeks. The Blue Devils are coached by Michael Marinello.
The team includes freshmen Giovanna Lanfranco, Jessica Lee and Claire Parks; sophomore Isabella Careccia-Johnson; juniors Jane Callery, Emersen Evans, Abigail Hopson, Sophie Lange, Lily Mitek, Brooke Parks and Hannah Song; and seniors Talia Addeo, Kate Balm, Victoria Befumo, McKenna Buffa, Quinn Fox, Isabella Lanfranco, Daniela Luca, Markella Markotsis, Renee McKean, Leah Sheran, Stephanie Wicky and Anna Bell Young.
Ms. Wickey and Ms. Young are the team captains. The Blue Devils will play their home matches at the town’s Dix Hills golf course.
The team will play a dozen matches with home and away contests scheduled against Bay Shore, Half Hollow Hills West, Half Hollow Hills East, West Babylon, Deer Park and West Islip. The team is scrimmaging Our Lady of Mercy Academy next week.
The team came about after students submitted a petition to school officials and then participated in a multiple week intramural program last spring. A call went out to the community to donate golf clubs, bags, etc. The response was overwhelming.
Early practices have involved all aspects of the game, from grip and stance to swing and even putting. Team members have been enthusiastic. A practice round was scheduled for this week.
“We have a great group of young ladies who are energetic and excited to play golf for Huntington,” Marinello said. “Everyone is working hard and having fun. It’s going to be a great year.”
