March 17, 2023

The Blue Devil varsity bowling team wrapped up its second season since the program was reinstated for the 2021/22 program. Junior Andrew Sullivan captured All-League honors after averaging a score of 180 with a season high of 257.

Coached by Huntington High School physical education teacher Christopher Taylor, the squad was captained by senior Nadeera Ali and junior Jack Ruthkowski.

Sullivan strived for consistency throughout the season. “Andrew is a talented bowler,” Taylor said.

Ruthkowski tallied an average score of 160 with a season best game of 220. “Jack has only bowled for two seasons and has a positive work ethic that should only help him improve.”

The highlight of the season came in a win over Hauppauge, the first victory by a Huntington bowling team in about 30 years. “We were tied heading into the final game and won three-out-of-five-games to win the match,” Mr. Taylor said.

Ali, Danielle Mendikyan and Mikah Schueller were the only seniors on the roster. “Our team was inexperienced, but competed against very good competition and always displayed good sportsmanship,” Taylor said.

With the top two bowlers returning in Sullivan and Ruthkowski and with interest building in the program at J. Taylor Finley Middle School and at both Woodhull Intermediate School and Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School, hopes are running high that the Blue Devil varsity is headed for a period of growth and success.
