New World Club co-Presidents Kimberly Panameno and Cristel Hernandez are a real life dynamic duo. The group mentors English as a new language students and helps them adjust to life in a new country and new school.

“Any club or organization would be blessed to have Kimberly and Cristel as its co-presidents,” said teacher and club faculty advisor Eileen Gonzalez. “They are a well-oiled machine that has kept the New World Club running very smoothly this year. Kim and Cristel have been very diligently planning our meetings and events throughout the year as well as checking in with the mentors on a regular basis.”

The two teenagers have been described as “natural leaders” and are “invaluable” to the club. “They lead by example,” Ms. Gonzalez said. “Both have been class mentors for multiple classes over the past two years. I noticed Cristel’s natural teaching abilities during one of these classes with Ms. Buchalter. She ran that class in her teacher’s absence and the students followed her directions and leaned on her for assistance.”

The duo has played key roles in many New World Club initiatives. “Cristel and Kimberly ran our clothing drive last year and executed it seamlessly and efficiently, always providing the club with updates on collection and needs,” Ms. Gonzalez said. “ They connected us with Ms. [Rosario] Lorenzana’s United Amigos, which was collecting coats at the time. I look forward to seeing what the girls have planned for the spring. I'm sure it will be a lot of fun for our English learners.”

The New World Club pairs newcomers with veteran students who mentor and guide them through a period of adjustment and help pave the way to success.
