Teacher Bryan Outsen likes to keep his Huntington High School Business Management students on their toes. The teenagers recently completed a semester project.

“During our unit on advertising and marketing for their student created businesses, the students took two days learning how to write a formal business letter and address a professional envelope,” Mr. Outsen said.

Class members were then asked to write a professional letter to a small business, sports team or celebrity showing support for their project or craft and asking for advice on how they started and maintained their current business or profession. “The goal was to receive promotional materials so they can get an example of the marketing and advertising methods used by successful companies,” Mr. Outsen said.

Responses have already been received from Yeti Drinkware, BLOCH Ballet, USA Baseball, the New York Mets’ Pete Alonso and actor Chris Pratt.

Mr. Outsen obtained a BS degree in the mathematics of actuarial science at Hofstra University in 2011. He earned a MA at Relay Graduate School of Education. Prior to coming to Huntington, he worked as a tutor at Huntington Learning Center in Patchogue; as a financial advisor at Cetera Investors in Westbury; as a special education and math teacher at Uncommon Charter High School in Brooklyn and as a math teacher at St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip.

Business Management and Human Relations is a one semester, half-credit course available to students in grades 9-12. “This course will help you acquire the skills necessary to make informed decisions, as well as provide you with information vital to realistic career choices,” according to the high school’s curriculum guide. “We will make you aware of the economics of work and you will develop an understanding of the marketplace. In addition, we will analyze your likes, dislikes, unique characteristics, competencies, and weaknesses with the intention of adding to your self-awareness. Problem solving and decision-making skills will also be taught. The culminating project is a ‘shark-tank’ inspired business competition. The course is required for a Business sequence.
