Washington School Goes Crazy for Reading

March 7, 2023

Washington Primary School is going crazy for reading. This year’s PTA Pick-a-Reading Partner program is underway. A neat video beamed into classrooms and shared with parents officially kicked off the 2023 initiative.

This year’s them is “Gotta Read’em All!” “The theme is inspired by Pokemon,” Principal Michelle Richards explained. “Each class will represent one “Read’em All” team, such as: Team Pikachu; Team Eevee; and Team Charizard!”

“Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education,” states the New York State PTA. “Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education. PARP is a program that asks a partner (parent, grandparent, babysitter, older sibling, cousin, friend, etc.) to read with a child for at least 20 minutes daily.”

Throughout the month of March, Washington students, faculty, staff, and families will celebrate the joy of reading.

“Our Washington YouTube page will have read alouds of books with either women and girl characters or authors to recognize Women’s History Month,” Dr. Richards said. “Each week students will return their reading log for a special PARP themed prize. We are on the hunt during this PARP 2023 to ‘Read’em All!’”

“PARP, developed in 1978 by State Senator James Donovan, is a program that cements the necessary bond between the home and the school to encourage love of reading in our children,” according to the New York State PTA.
