March 2, 2023
In her first six months at Huntington High School, Alexa Mazure has carved out a wonderful path for herself. The freshman has an A average in her classes and she’s impressed everyone with her talents as a musician. The teenager has already connected with several teachers who are making a positive difference in her life.
“During my time at Huntington, two teachers who ‘have really inspired me are Ms. [Debora] Balducci and Mrs. [Jenna] Merget,” Ms. Mazure said. They have both always had an open and safe space for me. They are overall just warm-hearted people.”
Ms. Mazure is taking classes in Spanish III, Algebra II, English 9 Honors, Living Environment Honors, Global History Regents, Creative Crafts and band. “As much as I love all of my classes, my favorites are Spanish, English, Creative Crafts and band,” she said.
“Even though I am only in my first year of high school, I have always wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse,” Ms. Mazure said. “My dream is to be able to help people during the most magical, yet painful time of their life.”
The teenager admits that she’s “very shy,” but she adds that “when I am comfortable, I could be the loudest in the room.”
Ms. Mazure enjoys being outdoors. She’s a member of Boy Scout Troop 218G. She loves playing the alto saxophone and performs with the Blue Devil marching band.
A member of the high school’s Gender-Sexuality Alliance, Ms. Mazure hopes to also join Huntington’s A World of Difference club, which pursues anti-bias initiatives as well as the Grandfriends club and Key Club as a sophomore.
“Over the summer, I went to Yawgoog which is a scout Sleepaway camp in Rhode Island,” Ms. Azure said. “It was an amazing experience because I got to get out of my comfort zone. I was able to make friends from all over New England.”
The freshman is enjoying a great year. “I love the environment and all of the amazing teachers,” Ms. Mazure said. “The support system is amazing and is just so welcoming.”
There’s little doubt that Ms. Mazure qualifies as a people person. She’s always surrounded by others. “I’m someone whose family and friends are very important to me,” she said.
Since she’s only a freshman, Ms. Mazure has many years ahead of her at Huntington High School. She’s a member of the Class of 2026. Yet, that hasn’t prevented her from looking ahead and planning for her future.
“In 10 years, I see myself with two Australian Shepards, two Mancoon cats and will have already graduated college,” Ms. Mazure said. “I see myself working at a nice hospital and living in an apartment. I see myself thriving and living my best life.”
