She has development very productive and enjoyable relationships with almost all of her teachers, but similar to probably all of her classmates, she has her favorites.
“Ms. [Kelly] Krycinski, my English 9 Honors teacher, seamlessly adapted her fascinating lessons on myths and heroes to the hybrid learning model, which brought joy to my COVID-ridden freshman year,” Ms. Gordon said. “I found her class to be both fun and intellectually stimulating and I’m thrilled to have been given the opportunity to act as her intern next year. I’ve also had the privilege of studying Honors and AP Chemistry under Ms. [Danielle] Raguzin for the past two years. She’s always managed to incorporate labs and fun anecdotes into her periods to allow our classes to understand complex concepts.”
Ms. Gordon’s academic grade average in the second marking period exceeded 107.5. The teenager is a hardworking student who values academic rigor and attention to detail. She loves traveling, reading and taking long walks on the beach with her dog, Tofu.
“So far, my experience at Huntington has been phenomenal,” Ms. Gordon said. “I’ve been given the opportunity to take thought-provoking courses, join a variety of extracurricular activities and meet fantastic people. My teachers have been incredibly supportive throughout my entire academic journey and I feel lucky to have another year left in such a welcoming learning environment.”
Intrigued by generations who came before her, Ms. Gordon enjoys wandering through museums and vintage shops with her close friends. After school, she interns at the Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center twice a week, working in a lab to test primers and prepare bacteria samples for science-oriented field trips.
“Last summer, I began interning at the Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center,” Ms. Gordon said. “Because I intend on going into the STEM field, this provided me with beneficial lab experience. I also accepted a bookselling position at Theodore’s Books in Oyster Bay, a small shop owned by former Congressman Steve Israel. In addition to working, I attended a two-week intensive course on Global Health and Medicine at Wellesley College, completed through the EXPLO program.”
Vice President of the high school’s Key Club chapter, Ms. Gordon is the senior editor of Huntington’s student newspaper, The Dispatch. She’s historian of the Environmental Club and concertmistress of the chamber orchestra.
“I don’t have a set college in mind yet, but I’d love a school on the smaller side that’s located on the east coast,” Ms. Gordon said. “I’m looking to major in biology or biochemistry and would love to pursue a career in scientific research or medicine.”
Ms. Gordon is a member of the board of advisors for the Social Justice Ambassadors and she’s a mentor with the New World club. A spectacular student, she’s been inducted into the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society, English Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society.
While she’s perfectly happy and comfortable in her hometown, the junior also enjoys exploring the world. “I come from a family of experienced travelers,” Ms. Gordon said. “So far, I’ve been to Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Ecuador, Uruguay, Argentina, Peru and Kenya.”
Ms. Gordon is taking classes in Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, AP US History, AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Environmental Science, AP Chemistry, Pre-Calculus Honors and Honors Symphony Orchestra.
“In 10 years, I hope to be working towards my master’s degree in microbiology and immunology,” Ms. Gordon said. “I’d like to be living in a big city, possibly abroad in Spain or the UK. I can see myself frequently attending a cute coffee shop to complete long hours of coursework in it.”
