County Runner-Up Haileigh Smith Leads Blue Devil Girls
March 1, 2023
Senior Haileigh Smith captured second place in women’s sabre in the county fencing tournament to lead the Blue Devil girls’ team this winter.
Smith compiled a 22-10 record and peaked when it counted most at the Section XI championships at Ward Melville. Smith and senior Fiona Brosnan captained the 17 member squad, which was coached by Michelle O’Brien and Vin O’Garra.
Brosnan went 20-8 in foil matches and senior Emely Cruz was 22-11 in foil. Eighth graders Julia Goodwin and Olivia Lee also turned in great seasons. O’Brien said the duo is “extremely motivated.”
The Blue Devil girls’ squad narrowly missed a berth and the third seed in the county team playoffs, “but due to ongoing illnesses with the athletes, it just did not pan out,” O’Brien said.
