February 16, 2023

Washington Primary School Principal Michelle Richards is a firm believer in the notion that it’s never too early to learn about potential careers. So Career Exploration Week was given the status it deserves around the building.

Maria Wen Adcock speaks to students at Washington Primary School.

“During the course of the week our second and third grade students learned how to write a children’s picture book from Washington parent and author Maria Wen Adcock,” Dr. Richards said.

Mrs. Adcock is the mother of third grader Sophie Adcock. “And, she is the author of the newest book in the Curious George series, ‘It’s Chinese New Year, Curious George!,” Dr. Richards said.

Mrs. Adcock shared her journey to being an author with the students as well as the many steps it takes to develop an idea for an engaging book. “Basic steps like identifying a character and developing a plot are very important to the writing process,” Dr. Richards said. “The students walked away with creative ideas of how they can take their everyday experiences and turn them into a picture book to share with the world.”

Mrs. Adcock is a freelance writer and the creator of the award-winning BiculturalMama.com, a parenting blog for bicultural families with a focus on Asian culture, according to an online profile. “She currently serves as editor and board member for Multicultural Kid Blogs.”

NY Metro Parents Magazine has honored BiculturalMama.com as a ‘Best Parenting Blog’ pick. Mrs. Adcock was a finalist in the “Best Social Media Mom in Long Island” category for the Mommy Poppins Bestie Awards.

Mrs. Adcock has worked in marketing for several Fortune 500 companies and national brands, including General Mills, Sara Lee Corporation, Earth’s Best, Real Simple Magazine, InStyle Magazine, Entertainment Weekly Magazine, Time Inc., and Conde Nast.

A graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in communications, Mrs. Adcock also holds an MBA in marketing from Indiana University.
