Cast and Crew Look Forward to Spring Musical

December 14, 2023

Several days of decompressing seems to have done the trick for Huntington High School drama club members who wrapped up a spectacular fall production last weekend with three performances of “Humbug.” The group is now turning its attention to next March’s musical.

The cast and crew of “Humbug” along with faculty director Michael Schwendemann, technical director Michael Zigon and costumes and set dressing coordinator Carrie Semelsberger took several days off before starting to think about the musical, which is set for Friday and Saturday, March 22-23.

The musical production will mark the final set of drama club performances for dozens of actors, stagehands and musicians who will graduate in June and head off to colleges shortly thereafter.

While rehearsals for “Humbug” were grueling at times, they did serve a purpose and everyone saw value in them and ultimately had fun along the way.

“During the duration of rehearsals for the play, I gained so much experience and respect for the cast,” Sam Soric said. “Typically, our play takes place a month prior, but this Christmas story fit the time frame so well, plus it made the waiting time between the play and the musical much faster. I have created such amazing bonds and I hope to perform with this group of people again. I’m so excited for the musical in the upcoming winter.”

An announcement is expected soon from Mr. Schwendemann on the March musical. He typically consults with building and district administration and also makes inquiries about securing the required rights to the show.

But in the meantime, the cast of “Humbug” continues to reflect on the play. “Everything went very well,” Walter Lopez said. “I think ‘Humbug’ was definitely a hit. We got so much positive feedback from the audience and the crowd just couldn’t stop laughing throughout the show. The cast and crew’s hard work truly paid off.”

Many, if not most, of the cast and crew of the fall production plans to participate in the spring musical, too. The fall show provided everyone with valuable insight.

“I felt everything went exactly how we choreographed it,” Mason Gomez said. “The pacing and comedy clashed together and made a big impression on the audience and that’s all we ever wanted!”

Drama club members get a few weeks off to rest and refresh before the big announcement and the date of auditions is revealed.

The seniors in the cast and crew took particular delight in last weekend. “I think the play went great,” Michaela Dopico said. “Everyone put their best into it and it was such a special memory to create with my fellow seniors.”
