David Dax Captures Suffolk Division II 12th Man Award
December 8, 2023
Huntington senior David Dax claimed the Suffolk Division II 12th Man Award at this week’s county football coaches association annual dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge.
The 12th Man Award is presented annually to a player who has overcome serious injury, disability, odds or adversity to return and contribute to the success of his team.
“David Dax has been the life and the spirit of this team,” head coach Ron Wilson said. “Last year he sustained a serious injury, breaking his collarbone in the first game. He continued to support his team, showing up to every practice and game. By the end of the season of his junior year, David returned for the last game of the season and played. Fast forward; midway through his senior year, he fell to the ground during a home game against Northport and broke his other collarbone. It broke my heart because he knew right away and was on the ground and it wasn’t tears of pain, but rather tears of hurt, frustration and disappointment because he loved playing the game and he loved doing this with his ‘band of brothers’ as he would often say. The very next day, he showed up to practice and was there to motivate his teammates and keep them positive. Once again, David never missed a practice or a game.”
Suffolk Division II football coaches voted Dax the award. The senior is considering Stony Brook University and a small group of other colleges at which to continue his education after graduating next June.
“I feel really good about winning the 12th Man Award,” Dax said. “It feels good to be appreciated and recognized for my dedication to the sport. It’s been a journey that I will cherish forever and never forget. Huntington football has taught me some great qualities that I will use throughout life I am very proud to be a Huntington Blue Devil.”
