Blue Devil Boys Are Off and Running

The Blue Devils are off and running. The Huntington varsity boys’ winter track and field team opened its season last Friday night at the Armory in Manhattan, vying against dozens of schools in the North Shore Invitational. The Blue Devils turned in several great early season performances and came home with numerous medals.

New to indoor track, but certainly not new to the sport, senior John Genova opened the season with a personal best thrown of 42-02.25 feet in shot put to earn a fifth place bronze medal. Sophomore Matt Ross tossed the weighted ball 37-08.5 feet to take 11th place in a field of more than 70.

On the track, senior Jahmar Francis won his heat and claimed a fifth place medal in the 300m dash with a personal best time of 36.79 seconds. Francis would later team up with senior David Dax, senior Christian Delgado and senior Nick Rosan in the 4x200m relay where the foursome captured third place and a bronze medal with a time of 1:34.78.

Senior Niko Lulewich ran a personal best time of 8.33 seconds in the 55m high hurdles to earn a spot in the finals, where he finished sixth in 8.48. Dax also had a fine showing in the 55m dash, finishing sixth in 6.76.

The following day Huntington competed in a meet at Suffolk-West in Brentwood and continued to perform well. Francis leaped 20-07.25 on his first attempt in long jump. Head coach Ron Wilson called the effort “amazing” for an early season meet. On his final attempt, Francis sailed over 22 feet, but was slightly over the line.

Lulewich competed in high jump and finished a close second with a leap of 5-08 feet. In the shot put, sophomore Ethan Lawless placed fifth with a toss of 42-10.5 feet and Genova was sixth with a toss of 38-04 feet. Senior Fredy Alvarez finished tenth with a toss of 35-08 feet.

In the freshman/sophomore division of 300m dash, eighth grader Rasiere Blizzard placed tenth in a field of more than 60 in a time of 43.96 seconds. He also finished 11th in the 55m dash in 7.63 seconds.

Sophomore Max Carino and freshman Eric Heinz finished first and third, respectively in the 1000m run freshman/sophomore division with times of 2:57.56 and 3:04.20.

In the open division of the 1000m run, junior Dylan Proctor finished sixth in 3:09.88 with senior Yovanni Rivera placing seventh in 3:10.01 and senior Tyler Godin taking 11th place in 3:20.93. In the 3200m run, senior Ethan Goleski finished eighth in 10:57.60.

Sophomore Titan Elysee continues to do well in the 55m high hurdles. He won the frosh/soph division in a time of 9.29 seconds. In the open 55m high hurdles Christian Delgado placed third in 8.70 seconds and Lulewich placed sixth in 8.86 seconds.

The Blue Devils will travel next to Staten Island to compete in the Nassau County Coaches Invitational on Saturday, December 9 before returning to Suffolk-West on Sunday, December 10.
