Junior Lauren Donaghy’s 25 Points Pace Huntington

Powered by a second quarter offensive explosion, the Huntington varsity girls’ basketball team won its season opener, topping non-league foe John H. Glenn, 51-43.

The Blue Devils trailed 16-15 after the first quarter, but Huntington went on a 24-14 run over the next eight minutes to open a 39-30 lead by halftime. The advantage eventually ballooned to double digits in the second half before John H. Glenn narrowed its deficit late in the game.

Huntington’s Lauren Donaghy led both teams with 25 points. The junior added eight rebounds, five steals and three assists. She connected on five three-point baskets.

Freshman Ava McDonald had 16 points for the Blue Devils along with eight assists, four rebounds and three steals. She dropped three three-pointers.

Freshman Madyn Kalb scored four points and added three rebounds and an assist. Senior Kayleigh Bender had a big game with 10 rebounds, three points and a pair of assists. Senior Reese Rinaldi had three points, three rebounds and an assist.

Now in his 14th season as Huntington’s head coach, Mike Kaplan improved his career record to 161-87 for a .648 winning percentage.

Huntington hosts Half Hollow Hills West on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in another non-league game.
