Huntington Grandfriends Club Members Keep Busy

December 4, 2023

Huntington High School Grandfriends club members have been a busy bunch. They’ve been spending a lot of time working with senior citizens in the community.

“The Halloween tea was a huge success at Sunrise Assisted Living,” said teacher Suzi Biagi, who along with faculty colleague Lauren Blackburn serves as the organization’s faculty advisor.

The club followed its Halloween tea initiative by collaborating with the Key Club and the A World of Difference club on a Thanksgiving food drive that collected more than 500 lbs. of non-perishable items.

“We were able to assemble ten Thanksgiving baskets and include $20 gift cards provided by the Grandfriends,” Ms. Biagi said. The baskets were delivered  to the Town of Huntington senior citizens center for its free basket raffle during the facility’s annual Thanksgiving dinner.

The remainder of the food was brought to Long Island Cares’ Harry Chapin Food Bank in Huntington.

“We are so proud of all the kids,” Ms. Blackburn said. “We had a huge turnout for the basket building project and we look forward to our next event, which will be holiday caroling on December 13 at Sunrise Assisted Living.

Huntington students who are interested in participating should see either Ms. Biagi (sbiagi@hufsd.edu) or Ms. Blackburn (lblackburn@hufsd.edu) or send one of them a message.

Grandfriends participates in intergenerational events throughout the year with a focus on the senior citizen community.
