Senior Sophia Kaloudis Commits to Oregon State University

If anyone knows the life of a competitive gymnast can be a grind, with extraordinary highs and lows its Sophia Kaloudis. The Huntington High School senior has challenged herself in the sport since she could walk and it is all paying off as she signed an NCAA Division I national letter of intent to compete on Oregon State University’s team.

“It’s simply impossible to compile with any accuracy the amount of hours the teenager has spent in the gym training and competing over the years. Forget about hundreds or probably even thousands. It’s more than likely beyond 10,000 hours, but no one will ever know for sure.

“Oregon State is a great school with strong academics that will allow me to pursue my interests in health sciences,” Ms. Kaloudis said. “The campus itself is beautiful and Corvallis is an exciting college town. The gymnastics coaches immediately made me feel welcome as did the girls on the team. I am really looking forward to joining the team and competing for OSU.”

The senior is also a spectacular student. Her academic grade average exceeded 103 in the recent first marking period.

“I have really enjoyed my time at Huntington High School,” Ms. Kaloudis said. “The diverse and challenging classes offered, along with a great teaching staff has prepared me for college and beyond. I have made great friendships that I am thankful for and have made my time at Huntington High School so memorable.”

During a recent signing ceremony in the Huntington High School lobby, she was joined by her parents, Chris and Christina, close friend Olivia Polinsky and Principal Brenden Cusack, among other classmates and administrators.

“Although I have not decided on a specific career at this time, I am interested in studying the health sciences,” Ms. Kaloudis said.

The teenager continues to work hard in her classes and train for just as many hours as she has in the past. When Ms. Kaloudis steps foot on the Oregon State campus she intends to be as ready as she can possible be.

“My hope for my gymnastics career is to earn a regular spot in the competition lineup for all-around while helping my team advance to the NCAA championships,” Ms. Kaloudis said.
