April 28, 2023

The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team played one of its best games of the season to top Middle Country on its home field, 10-8. The victory improved the Blue Devils’ record to 8-4.

Huntington led 6-5 at halftime and went on to outscore the home team in the second half, 4-3. Middle County battled to the last seconds, keeping the Blue Devils on their collective toes.

Kayleigh Bender (27 goals; 22 assists) tallied four goals and an assist to lead Huntington’s offense. Gianna Forte (24g; 13a) notched a pair of goals. Grace Agrillo (11g; 5a) had a goal and an assist. Bridget Callery (12g; 9a), Devon St. John (16g; 5a) and Jolie Weinschreider (25g; 5a) also scored goals in the game. Andie DiGioia made four saves in the goal for Huntington.

“This win was exactly what we needed,” Forte said. “We were 100 percent the better team out on the field and deserved this win more than anything. It was a complete team win. We are going to use this as momentum as we continue into the playoff push.”

Huntington has a very young team. The Blue Devils are starting two eighth graders and five freshmen. Team captains Gianna Forte, Grace Agrillo and lockdown defender Laurel Bonn are providing the squad with the on field leadership it needs.

The game at Middle Country was a confidence builder. “Today’s win will be unforgettable,” Bonn said. “We finally put all of the pieces together and played hard all 50 minutes. This proves that we can compete with the best teams and hold our own.”

Huntington hosts first place Ward Melville on Friday at 5 p.m. at Blue Devil Stadium. Sachem East visits on May 1 for a 4 p.m. contest. The Blue Devils close out the regular season with road games at William Floyd (May 5) and Smithtown East (May 10).
