April 28, 2023

Huntington High School’s Aria Hannah captured first place in the open category and the overall Best in Show Award; Victoria Befumo garnered third place in the minimalist category and Gabriella Miller claimed honorable mention in the open category in the Huntington Camera Club’s annual high school competition.

The three seniors are studying with Huntington art teacher Pamela Piffard, who leads the photography program. Huntington had 33 student photographers participate in the contest.

The Huntington Camera Club’s annual contest is considered by many to be Long Island’s most prestigious. This year’s competition drew 925 entries from 492 students representing 15 Nassau and Suffolk high schools and 18 photography teachers.

“When we submitted the work, I had high hopes that this year we would win in a few categories,” Mrs. Piffard said. “Art is subjective so you just never know what the judges will like. The work submitted was so incredibly strong and I am so pleased the kids are being recognized for their creativity and vision.”

Ms. Hannah’s award was accompanied by a $200 cash stipend and coveted $500 Nikon gift card for her image that won both first place in the open category as well as Best in Show overall.

Ms. Hannah said was “shocked” that she won. “It was such an honor to receive this award,” she said. “Seeing other photographers’ work and learning about everyone’s process was an amazing experience.”

All three Huntington students attended the awards ceremony. Ms. Befumo said it was “nice” to have her work recognized after working so hard all year. Ms. Miller said she really enjoyed the night, the critiques and having the recognition of her work.

The Huntington Camera Club has hosted the competition since 1991. Since more than $40,000 in prizes have been presented. “The club is proud to shine a spotlight on the talents of these young photographers and their teachers,” according to the organization’s website. “A competition of this nature is only possible because of the generosity of the local business community and club membership.”

A panel of judges reviewed every image with an eye on their technical aspects and creativity as well as their ability to fit the category in which they were entered.
