April 27, 2023
The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team broke open a close game by scoring five unanswered second half goals to top Walt Whitman at Blue Devil Stadium, 8-1. The win improved the team’s record to 6-3.
Huntington led 3-2 at halftime before going on a second half scoring frenzy to put the game away. The Blue Devils play today at first place Ward Melville at 5 p.m. Huntington is in fifth place out of 20 teams in Suffolk Division I.
Against Walt Whitman, Mikey Kline (13g; 19a) tallied two goals and an assist. Timmy McDonald also scored two goals in his first game back after being sidelined by an injury during the football season. Tom Girimonti (18g; 16a) scored a goal and added an assist. Anthony Annunziata (15g; 8a), Peter Breingan (9g) and Brian Hrybenko (5g; 5a) all scored goals in the game. Aidan Carrello (5g; 2a) and Colin Lennon (15g; 7a) had assists. Goalie Sammymac Arner recorded eight saves in the win and now has 78 this spring.
The Blue Devils played a good game, both offensively and defensively. Carrello had five ground balls for Huntington. Whitman goalie Kieran Davis stopped 21 Huntington shots.
“Our defense played well and had a different mindset,” Arner said. A noisy crowd attended the game, which played out under partly sunny skies.
“Although it wasn’t an accurate demonstration of our game and we didn't do it in our usual dominating way; a win is a win,” Annunziata said. “The defense played great as a unit and we were able to capitalize on Whitman’s mistakes. Lots of work to get done from now until the playoffs. We are taking it one day at a time. The guys are all working hard every day and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
