April 24, 2023

The Huntington varsity girls’ lacrosse team is prone to streaks. The Blue Devils won their first three games before dropping three straight. After cruising past visiting Walt Whitman, 17-3 last Saturday morning, the team is in the midst of a four game winning streak.

Huntington jumped out to a 9-2 halftime advantage and was never seriously threatened in the game. The victory gives the Blue Devils a 7-3 mark through 10 games under first year head coach Katie Reilly.

Jolie Weinschreider (20g; 5a) tallied four goals and two assists and Gianna Forte (22 goals; 12 assists) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Blue Devils. Kayleigh Bender (23g, 21a) had two goals and two assists. Grace Gordon (10g; 2a) and Devon St. John (15g; 5a) both scored twice. Bridget Callery (11g; 9a), Ava McDonald (2g) and Riley Murtagh (4g) also scored goals in the game. Grace Agrillo (10g; 4a) had three assists. Goalie Andie DiGioia recorded nine saves to notch the win.

“Today’s win was exactly what we needed,” Forte said. “It was truly a team win and both our offense and defense played really well. We have some tough games coming up and are more than capable of playing with them. We’re going to take it one game at a time and keep playing with each other and for each other.”

Laurel Bonn once again led the Blue Devils’ defensive unit with a spectacular performance. Bonn is Huntington’s lockdown defender and she is indispensable to the team both as a player and leader on and off the field.

Huntington needs to keep winning if it wants to reach the post-season and earn a good seed in the playoff bracket.

“I think today’s game showed what we’re capable of as a team and set the tone for the rest of the season,” St. John said. “Whitman is a good team and we showed up and held them to three goals, which we are more than capable of doing to any team on our schedule this year.”

The Blue Devils travel to Connetquot tonight for a game under the lights at 6:45 p.m. Huntington plays at Middle County (Centereach) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

The Blue Devils return home on Friday for a 5 p.m. against Ward Melville. Huntington hosts Sachem East on Monday, May 1 at 4 p.m.

Huntington played at William Floyd on Friday, May 5 at 5:30 p.m. and then concludes the regular season at Smithtown East on Wednesday, May 10 at 5:30 p.m.

Whitman’s three goals were a season low for the Wildcats. “Today was the type of game that you feel in control,” Agrillo said. “We were able to play a solid offense. We have a couple of tough games ahead of us, but we feel ready and confident.”
