Blue Devil Unified Basketball Gears Up
April 14, 2023
Huntington High School’s co-ed varsity Unified basketball team is up and running and practicing as the Blue Devils prepare for their first game.
Unified basketball features Special Olympians paired with general education students who serve as teammates and assistants on the co-ed rosters. About three dozen Suffolk high schools will be fielding teams this year.
Upcoming practices are scheduled for Tuesday, April 18, Thursday, April 20, Tuesday, April 25, Wednesday, April 26 and Thursday, April 27. Practices will run from 3:00-4:30 p.m. either on the outdoor courts adjacent to the gym or indoors when the facility is available.
There’s still time to participate. Send a message to Blue Devil Unified basketball varsity head coach Jordan Ioviero at jioviero@hufsd.edu.
Games are scheduled with Half Hollow Hills East (April 28), John H. Glenn (May 2), Northport (May 4), Half Hollow Hills West (May 11), Commack (May 16) and Walt Whitman (May 18). While the Blue Devils are practicing at the high school, they will play their games in the cozy Finley Middle School gym.
High school boys and girls JV and varsity basketball players are allowed to be on the team to facilitate action during practices, but they are not permitted to play in games. They will, however, garner varsity letters.
“We have a great group of young men and women and we are anticipating a really fun season,” Ioviero said. “There’s still time to join us. Reach out to me.”
