Nadeera Ali Thrives in Science Research Program

September 29, 2022

Nadeera Ali is picking up where she left off last year as one of the Huntington High School science research program’s stars. The senior is collaborating on a project with classmates Rachel Morina and Lauren Gennarelli.

With three years of experience already under her belt, Ms. Ali is a veteran of the research program. Her freshman year project was titled “The Effect of Activated Carbon on the Amount of Contaminants in the Long Island Drinking Water.” The teenager and her partners entered their sophomore year project titled “The Effect of RF Radiation on Earthworms” into the annual Long Island Science Congress contest.

As a junior, Ms. Ali and her partners won a Long Island Science Congress Merit Award for their project named “The Effect of CRISPR on the LacZ gene in E. coli.”

Ms. Ali is looking forward to engaging in research into endocrine disruptors found in menstrual products this year. She will be using freshwater ramshorn snails to test a variety of products. “The snails were a good alternate and a good model for the testing,” Ms. Ali said.

The senior has a science research program internship with teacher Deborah Beck. Ms. Ali will be helping underclassmen refine their ability to analyze scientific articles and present their research.

The teenager is excited about her internship and helping less experienced students as much as she can. Ms. Ali is equally enthusiastic about her research group’s project and is striving to close out her time in the science program on a high note.
