Laurel Bonn’s Hat Trick Paces Huntington Field Hockey

Laurel Bonn continued her hot play by notching a hat trick at Riverhead last Saturday. The Huntington senior’s three goals along with goals by Charlotte Curtin and Tessie Maerz led the Blue Devils to a 5-1 victory, which improved the team’s record to 7-2.

One of the top players on Long Island, Bonn has tallied seven goals and a pair of assists this fall. The Blue Devils did all of their scoring in the first half following the long bus ride to the North Fork. Senior Grace Agrillo assisted on two goals. Curtin and Maerz also had assists in the game. Goalie Sophia Weiss recorded a save.

Agrillo, another of Long Island’s finest players has five goals and three assists this season. Curtin (4g; 2a) and Maerz (3g; 4a) have also been integral to the Blue Devils’ success.

Riverhead goalie Kerry Stavracos was magnificent in the game, stopping 10 hard Huntington shots. “I feel like today’s win was something that every team member contributed to,” senior Laura Curtin said. “It was a fun game.”

Seeded third in Suffolk, Huntington’s only losses to date have come against No. 1 Northport and No. 2 Ward Melville.

Playing at Blue Devil Stadium against undefeated defending state champion Northport last week, Huntington played very well, falling 2-1 after holding the Tigers scoreless in the second half.

Huntington gave up a goal almost as soon as play started. Northport’s second goal deflected in off a Blue Devil player’s stick. Other than that, Huntington played nearly perfect field hockey. Goalie Carlee Schultz enjoyed a career day with 21 saves. Agrillo had an unassisted goal in the game. Tigers goalie Natalie McKenna stopped six Blue Devil shots.

“We are having a great season,” said Erin Scanlon, one of Huntington’s biggest stars. “We have grown as a team and are working very hard to make it to the playoffs. I’m very excited for where our team is headed.”

The Blue Devil defense has been splendid all season and senior Gemma Cartwright is a big reason why. “The season has been going really well so far,” she said. “As a team, we have grown so close and our hard work definitely shows on the field.”

The entire Huntington roster is all-in on going all-out to win this fall. “So far, so good,” said Agrillo about the team’s performance. “We are well into the season. I feel like we are blending together as a team really well with everyone offering their very best.”
