September 28, 2022

Jessica Kuom is a happy, well-liked and hardworking Huntington High School junior who is finding the good things in the world as she goes about striving to reach her goals while surrounding herself with loyal and encouraging friends.

Ms. Kuom is a soft-spoken and sweet young woman who always has a smile for everyone. Her good natured personality is appreciated by classmates, teachers and coaches. She’s popular for being a kind and considerate teenager who gets along with everyone.

“This past summer, I hung out with a lot of my friends and went up to New Hampshire for my cousin’s wedding,” Ms. Kuom said. “It was a lot of fun. I also got my driver’s license.”

The junior said she’s enjoying studying in the high school’s fashion design and illustration program and taking classes in Wilson Tech’s cosmetology program.

The teenager runs on the Blue Devil varsity cross country and winter and spring track teams. Last weekend in a meet held in New Jersey, she covered the 5K course in 22:50 beating her previous personal best time of 24:19.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Coach [Sarah] Hall this coming winter track season along with the new coach, John Kaplan,” Ms. Kuom said. “I’m also really thankful to have Coach [Mark] Jackson for my cross country season. He’s been nothing but amazing and really has been motivating me along with our team to improve on our times and to have fun.”

“Jessica is a hardworking and talented athlete and diligent student,” Ms. Hall said. “She has grown so much over the last year that I have known her and I am so excited to see how she excels for the rest of this season and into the winter and spring.”

Ms. Kuom is a distance runner and Blue Devil track coaches believe she is ready to thrive as a junior and senior during the coming winter and spring seasons.

“My high school experience has been nothing but good so far,” she said. “I have been involved in cross country and track and hopefully I’m going to join some clubs moving forward.”

Ms. Kuom goes about her business in a quiet, unassuming way. She doesn’t call attention to herself, preferring a steady, determined approach that’s focused on doing her best and enjoying the moment.

“I have a few colleges in mind, but one that I’m really striving toward is Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan,” Ms. Kuom said. “I would like to go into the business field.”
