Blue Devil Girls’ Golf Organizes for Spring

September 23, 2022

Huntington High School’s new girls’ golf team is getting organized for the spring season. The new program came about when about 40 girls’ signed a petition asking the district to create a varsity team and Superintendent James W. Polansky put it in motion.

Dozens of girls’ participated in an intramural golf program last spring. A call that went out to the community for golf equipment resulted in the donation of about 15 complete sets of clubs along with bags, balls, tees, gloves and even a book.

Longtime Huntington physical education Michael Marinello will coach the new girls’ golf team. He has coached the Blue Devil boys’ golf team for many years. He is currently assigned as the department coordinator of physical education and athletics.

The district ordered shirts, shorts and hats for the new team along with balls imprinted with the school name and both have been delivered. Many girls have indicated they intend to play. Teachers James Graber and Jenna Merget have been approved to work as volunteer assistant coaches.

Marinello, Graber and Merget are all avid golfers themselves and they are excited to start working with the new team members. Interested on playing on the new teams? Visit Marinello in the athletic office or send a message to him at mmarinello@hufsd.edu.

The Blue Devils will play in Section XI’s League I with Half Hollow Hills East, Half Hollow Hills West, West Babylon, West Islip, Deer Park and Bay Shore.

The Blue Devils’ host home course has not been finalized. The team has made inquiries at Huntington area public and private courses. If anyone in the community can help facilitate a home course, send a message to athletic director Jim Hoops at jhoops@hufsd.edu. The team would hold five home meets and five or six practices at the home course in April and early May. The rest of the time the Blue Devils will utilize an area driving range, school facilities and Sunken Meadow State Park.
