Haileigh Smith Embraces Senior Year at Huntington

September 20, 2022

Haileigh Smith is one of the stars of Huntington High School’s Class of 2023. She has compiled an exceptional academic record while fully embracing the club and athletic programs.

The teenager keeps busy and always seems to be in the midst of a worthwhile pursuit. She has a talent for juggling many things at any one time and doing everything well.

“I spent the earlier portion of my summer visiting colleges and trying to get a feel for what I’m looking for in a school,” Ms. Smith said. “The month of August was used primarily for completing summer assignments and filling out the basics of the Common App.”

Huntington faculty members expect Ms. Smith to ultimately land at a top tier university. She has won numerous academic related honors and developed an impressive and diversified resume that should be attractive to admission officials.

Ms. Smith’s class schedule includes courses in Advanced Placement Calculus AB, AP Latin, AP English Literature & Composition, AP US Government & Politics with economics and Regents Physics.

“I’m very excited to be back with Mrs. [Kristin] Fortunato and my classmates in Latin,” Ms. Smith said. “It’s been the same group since seventh grade so it’s interesting to see how far we’ve all come.”

Ms. Smith has been a student in Huntington UFSD since kindergarten at Washington Primary School. She has always excelled in and out of the classroom.

“I’m especially looking forward to working with Mrs. [Patricia] Avelli and Mrs. [Deborah] Beck and the National Honor Society and Science Honor Society, respectively as well as Coach [Todd] Donaghy with volleyball and Coach [Michelle] O’Brien with fencing.

Leadership come naturally to Ms. Smith, who will be serving as the Key Club’s treasurer, the Science Honor Society’s financial secretary, the National Honor Society’s historian and tutoring coordinator and the Blue Devil varsity club’s treasurer. “I am also planning on getting involved with the Latin, English and Math Honor Societies,” she said.

The teenager has won varsity letters while playing for the Blue Devil volleyball, fencing and softball teams. “I’ve loved my high school experience so far, especially when it comes to the different sports teams that I’ve participated on,” Ms. Smith said. “I really enjoy the school spirit and close friends that every season has brought me throughout these past four years at Huntington.”

When it comes to college possibilities, the senior is keeping her options open and not showing her hand. “I have a general list of five-to-six schools I’m interested in, but haven’t really chosen a favorite yet,” Ms. Smith said. “As far as career goals, I’m interested in entering the field of dermatology at the moment.”
