Blue Devils Top Commack to Remain Perfect

September 16, 2022

The Huntington varsity field hockey team has been a well-oiled machine through the first five games of the season. The Blue Devils improved to 5-0 when they bested Commack on its home field on Thursday afternoon.

Huntington displayed its typical hustling, aggressive style, using all the players on the field to move the ball and dominate its foe.

Huntington took a 1-0 first half lead on a goal by Tessie Maerz off an assist from Ella O’Heir. Laurel Bonn added an insurance goal in the second half off a feed from Charlotte Curtin.

Commack goalie Sophia Newman was spectacular in stopped 20 blistering Blue Devil shots. Huntington goalie Carlee Schultz notched her second shutout of the season on a gorgeous afternoon.

Huntington has had some close calls in its first five games, but it always finds a way to win. Against Commack, the Blue Devils had to earn it and the players responded with all-out effort.

When Huntington head coach Kathy Wright moved to insert a substitute, the player being replaced came off the field drenched in sweat. Senior Laura Curtin thought the key to the game was teamwork and sharp passing and Schultz agreed.

The Blue Devils have been playing together for many years, including in off-season leagues. “We have a really good group of girls who all play hard,” said Wright, who is assisted by Flower Hill classroom teacher Allison Conlon. “They get so excited winning these games. They’ve put in a lot of effort over the past few years and it is nice to see it paying off.”

Many of Huntington’s best players fly under the radar, especially its defensive corps, but opponents know who they are and have found it difficult navigate their way around them and to the goal. The Blue Devil starters are all-around excellent, but many of the players coming off the best could be starting on only any other Suffolk team. That depth is serving the team well.

These Blue Devils are the toast of Huntington High School and the players love it.
