Senior Kathryn Montefusco to Swim at Villanova University

Kathryn Montefusco is a full-of-life Huntington High School senior who has excelled academically and athletically over the past four years. The teenager has already captured All-State honors three times in four trips to the state championships with the Blue Devil swimming team and she has high hopes for the current season.

Ms. Montefusco has given a verbal commitment to swim on Villanova University’s NCAA Division I swimming and diving team. In the meantime, she leading the undefeated Blue Devil swimmers this fall.

“I had a busy summer,” Ms. Montefusco said. “I practiced all summer with my club swim team and traveled to Indianapolis to compete in a championship meet in August. I had a blast racing and cheering on all my teammates. After we returned, I took a family trip to Maine and spent time hiking and swimming at Acadia National Park, which was an amazing place. I also worked part of the summer as a swim instructor and lifeguard at the Huntington YMCA.”

The senior is enjoying classes in Advanced Placement Biology, AP English Literature & Composition, AP Studio Art: Drawing, Pre-Calculus – Beacon program, Introduction to Photography and Participation in Government. Ms. Montefusco is especially pleased to be studying photography because it’s a class she “really wanted” to fit into her schedule before she heads off to college.

“I’m very fortunate to have a number of teachers that I’ve enjoyed working with throughout high school,” Ms. Montefusco said. “This is my fourth year working with Ms. [Kristin] Singer in AP Drawing, who has always been a great mentor to me and has been such a pleasure to work with each year.”

The senior is once again collaborating with Blue Devil varsity swimming coaches Christopher Helmke and Meg McConnell. “I’m so happy to be working with Coach Helmke and Coach Meg again this year,” Ms. Montefusco said. “They’ve both been such great, supportive coaches. It’s hard to believe I’ve been a member of the team for six years now.”

The swim team started its official practices on Monday August 22. Huntington has joined with Walt Whitman and Harborfields and a single swimmer from John H. Glenn to form was has been dubbed a “super team.”

“Just before school started, we all came together to raise money for cancer research through the Swim Across America Foundation,” Ms. Montefusco said. “This was our second time participating in the program and it was a really great day, raising $5,000 for such an important cause.”

The teenager has been inducted into the four separate academic honor societies and she volunteers with Huntington High School’s Key Club chapter. “I’m very excited to get to work with these organizations again this year,” Ms. Montefusco said.  • Registration details must be followed or registration will not be accepted

Known as a sweet young woman who is a wonderful classmate and teammate, Ms. Montefusco is the type of person who always gives her best effort.

“I’ve had a wonderful experience here at Huntington High School,” Ms. Montefusco said. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many amazing teachers and students that have become great friends. I feel strongly that our high school is a very unique place, because it allows you to engage in so many different classes and clubs; there really is something for everyone to get involved with here!.”

Ms. Montefusco is enthusiastic about studying at Villanova University and swimming on its NCAA Division I team. “It’s a great honor to be asked to join their team, as they won their ninth-consecutive Big East championship last spring,” she said. “I’m still undecided on a major, but I’m considering psychology or possibly health science. I’m really excited to begin my studies at Villanova, and feel that all of my high school experiences will have me well-prepared to do so.”
