Blue Devils Win First Meet in Pool

September 13, 2022

The combined Huntington-Walt Whitman-Harborfields-John H. Glenn girls’ swimming and diving squad is what’s known around Section XI as a super team. Many high schools have combined for both boys’ and girls’ swimming and that includes the Blue Devils

Huntington’s contingent includes two-time All-State senior Kathryn Montefusco, sophomores Josie Sullivan, Nina Fascilla and Isabelle Gregorio and eighth graders Gemma Bedell, Alison Hahn, Avery Joynt, Sena Knopf and Ella Van Horn.

The super team won its first meet of the season late last week, topping Sachem North, 99-83. The contributions to the victory by the Blue Devils were notable.

Montefusco swam on the winning 200 yard medley relay and Bedell led off for the fourth place finishing team in the same race.

Montefusco won the 200 yard IM, Knopf was second in the 100 yard butterfly and Sullivan was fourth in the 50 yard freestyle.

Montefusco also took first in the 100 yard breaststroke and Sullivan added a fifth place finish in the 100 yard freestyle.

In the 200 yard freestyle, Gregorio, Joynt and Van Horn helped the team finish in fourth place in the event.

Huntington’s swimmers are coached by Christopher Helmke and Meg McConnell.
