The Huntington varsity football team will take the field for its 99th season when it travels to North Babylon for the season opener on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. This is Steve Muller’s 27th season as head coach. His staff includes Kevin Graham, Dan Basil, Antoine Swain, James Byrnes and Kevin Thorbourne. Practice commenced August 22. The team had a game scrimmage last Friday at Harborfields.

Huntington will be led into battle by senior quarterback Anthony Annunziata. Key players also include Christian St. John (RB/LB), Joe Algieri (OL/LB), Dominick Vidota (OL/DL), Aidan Carrello (WB/DB), David Dje Bi Baleborzan Simrell (RB/DB), Timothy McDonald (RB/DB) and defensive lineman Isaiah Thomas.

A cast of supporting players will play a key role in determining whether the Blue Devils enjoy a successful season. Huntington’s small roster will keep many players on the field for most of the game.

Annunziata, who has given Yale University’s men’s lacrosse team a verbal commitment will be counted on to deliver as the Blue Devil signal caller. He proved last fall that he came scramble and throw accurate passes. He’ll be asked to do even more this season.

While Huntington is relatively young and inexperienced on the varsity level, the team boasts above average speed at the skill positions. Several of the team’s running backs are capable of busting through the line into open field and outsprinting the defense.

The home opener is set for next Saturday against West Babylon at 1:30 p.m. Games with Lindenhurst, Centereach, Smithtown East, West Islip, Connetquot and Copiague will follow.
